Welcome to the debate about Surf Tourism

In the Mentawais or anywhere surf adventurers find pristine surf and cant resist sharing the secret with their mates.....

Martin Daly's latest  article at surfline has sparked intense debate in the surf media and surf forums. Like the other pioneers, Martin is trapped in a conflict of interest between his love of isolation and pristine uncrowded surf and his need to support his very large business....

He is not alone. The surf resort industry is booming (or it was up till the end of 2008) and regulation of surf resources has emerged as one of the most controversial issues to hit the media since shortboards blew planks away in the 60s. The challenge the industry faces is:

"How to find em virgins and NOT leave em whores"

Roberthy Saogo, Chairman of the Mentawai Marine Tourism Association has been in intense discussions with Jakarta and Mentawai authorities setting the ground work for a the establishment of a Marine National Park encompassing the Mentawai archipelago. Robert accompanied Rick Cameron to a national congress of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce in Jakarta. The lack of patrols and management in the area was identified as the main reason for the slow down in land based development in the islands.

Rick, who recently completed a two year rotation as Australian Consular Warden for West Sumatra, also discussed these issues with Embassy officials.

      September (Summer) 2008

Talking to Martin Daly, one gets the feeling that he's a bit haunted by the mark he's made on surfing. A lifelong surfer and diver who spent his youth working on boats in the Indian Ocean, the Aussie is credited with turning our collective focus to the Mentawai Islands after photos and video from a 1992 trip aboard his salvage vessel the Indies Trader made their way into surf magazines and soon had the entire surf community licking its collective chops at the images of perfect waves and ..

STOP PRESS (22/12/08): The trial of Rick Cameron's assailant has had to be postponed. The defendant in the trial, Martin Kalajzich, was involved in a road accident in Bali last week. Kalajzich posted bail of Rp60 Million to fly to Bali while awaiting trial. Whilst in Bali he crashed his motorbike into a parked car fracturing his skull and destroying his bike. Police in attendance said he was intoxicated at the time of the crash and are not considering him a victim of foul play.

It's unknown how long the trial will be delayed.
